Hardware:

Model610 will work with any iPad hardware to control the Sequential Circuits  Six-Trak and MAX synthesizers via MIDI.

For connecting the iPad and synth I recommend any class compliant USB MIDI interface combined with a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.  I’ve been using the M-Audio Uno with the Apple Camera Connection Kit for my iPad 2.  Alternatively you can use a dedicated iOS MIDI device such as the ESI MIDI nTour CX or IK Multimedia iRig 2.

If you have a Mac and a MIDI interface in your studio you can also connect to your synth over Wifi via network MIDI.  Use Audio MIDI Setup to configure a network session, connect to the iPad, and create live routings from the iPad to the proper MIDI output channel.  Be aware that network MIDI is not as reliable as a hard wired connection and may not work well in MONO and STACK modes.

Setup:

Step 1. Connect the iPad to the synthesizer via your MIDI solution.  Power up the synthesizer and then launch the app.

Step 2. Tap the [?] button in the top right corner to open the setup page.  Test MIDI OUT to verify that the synth is receiving MIDI from the app.

Step 3 (Optional).  Press any key on the synthesizer to verify that the app is receiving MIDI from the synthesizer.  This step is only required for MONO and STACK modes. You can still use POLY and UNISON modes without receiving MIDI from the synthesizer.

Known Issues and Troubleshooting:

– In MONO and STACK modes, voices FIVE and SIX do not respond to SAW, PULSE, and TRI LFO waveform ON/OFF messages.  This appears to be a bug in the Six-Trak / MAX firmware.  I hope to have a workaround in the next release.

– CoreMIDI input receive sometimes becomes disabled.  Unplugging and replugging the iPad MIDI connection should restore it.

– When in SEQUENCER, ARPEGGIATOR, and STACK modes the Six-Trak will not respond to MIDI control messages from the app.

– When using network MIDI, performance in MONO and STACK modes can be unusable due to MIDI notes getting re-triggered and stuck.
